Explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dusts. Directive 94/9/EC (‘ ATEX 95 ’ or ‘the ATEX Equipment Directive’) refers to the equipment and protective systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres. The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC is a directive adopted by the European Union (EU) to facilitate free trade in the EU by aligning the technical and legal requirements in the member states for products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
