The ATEX directive (directive 94/9/CE) applies to all products for systems designed to be used in explosive atmospheres. ATEX stands for: AT= Atmosphere. EX= Explosive 94/9/CE (year, no., European Community). ATEX stands for atmosphères explosibles. It’s a European Union directive from the European Committee for Standardization that covers “equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.” An atmosphere can be explosive for several reasons, including flammable gases, mists or vapors, or combustible dust. Directive 2014/34/EU Since 1 December 2018 the references of harmonised standards are published in, and withdrawn from the Official Journal of the European Union by means of 'Commission implementing decisions'. The term ATEX is used for the European Union's (EU) 94/9/EC directive addressing equipment and instrumentation intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Guidelines to Directive 2014/34 EU ATEX - Arbetsmiljö – EU
Explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dusts. Directive 94/9/EC (‘ ATEX 95 ’ or ‘the ATEX Equipment Directive’) refers to the equipment and protective systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres. The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC is a directive adopted by the European Union (EU) to facilitate free trade in the EU by aligning the technical and legal requirements in the member states for products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. CENELEC design standards are still used. The ATEX directive (directive 94/9/CE) applies to all products for systems designed to be used in explosive atmospheres. The ATEX Directive The ATEX Directive is in place due to the risk that the accidental ignition of an atmosphere containing a large quantity of gas, vapour, mists or dust may cause an explosion which could cause material damage or even loss of life. The ATEX directive ATEX is currently used as a synonym for two directives who describe which equipment is allowed in an hazardous environment and how to classify those hazardous areas with an explosive atmosphere.
